Some trips just hit differently. This California itinerary was one of those.
If you love trips that combine scenic drives, national parks, hidden beaches, and unforgettable family moments, you might also enjoy our guide to multi-generational travel planning and how to balance different travel styles without turning vacation into a full-time job.
We packed a lot into a short stretch, but somehow it never felt rushed. It felt layered. Mountains, coastline, small towns, and just enough unexpected moments to make it memorable.
Hereโs how it all came together.
Stop 1: Yosemite National Park (2 Nights)
Yosemite National Park

Flying into Sacramento gives you a solid starting point, and from there it is straight into one of the most iconic landscapes in the country.
Two nights in Yosemite is just enough to get a feel for it, but you will absolutely leave wanting more.
Yosemite is one of those destinations where timing and pacing matter more than people expect. If national park vacations are on your list, our National Parks travel planning helps families avoid the most common mistakes when building these itineraries.
We explored:
- Yosemite Valley for those classic, postcard views
- Half Dome towering in the distance
- El Capitan with climbers that make you question your life choices
- Waterfalls that somehow feel louder in person
And here is where it surprised us. Parts of Yosemite gave us serious Washington and Oregon vibes. The greenery, the mist, the way the light hits the trees. It felt like the Pacific Northwest decided to show up in California for a few days.
The Drive: Yosemite to Monterey (Hidden Gems Included)

This drive is underrated.
As you leave Yosemite and head toward Monterey, you pass through Californiaโs agricultural heartland. Think:
- Almond orchards
- Peach and cherry stands (seasonal but worth stopping for)
- Roadside fruit stands that make you pull over even if you just ate
This is one of those stretches where you slow down on purpose. Grab fresh fruit, stretch your legs, and let the scenery shift from mountains to farmland to coast.
Honestly, some of the best travel moments are the unplanned ones. A random fruit stand, a roadside bakery, or pulling over because something simply looked interesting. That is usually where the best memories happen, and it is why we always encourage travelers to leave room in their itinerary for spontaneous experiences.
Stop 2: Monterey (1 Night)

Monterey is that perfect โone night but wish it was longerโ stop.
Highlights:
- The famous 17-Mile Drive with dramatic coastal views
- Cannery Row for shops and waterfront strolling
- Carmel-by-the-Sea which honestly feels like a movie set
And here is where California started shape-shifting again. The coastline gave us hints of Hawaii with those deep blues and relaxed energy. At times, the water even reminded us of the vibrant colors you see in the Bahamas.
The Pacific Coast Highway Drive

Driving the Pacific Coast Highway is one of those bucket list experiences that actually lives up to the hype.
Planning a California coastal drive can feel overwhelming fast because there are so many route options, hidden stops, and timing considerations. If you want help narrowing it down, we help travelers build customized road trip itineraries based on their pace, interests, and travel style.
We made our way south with stops including:
- Big Sur for dramatic cliffs and ocean views
- Malibu for that classic SoCal feel
- Laguna Beach for hidden coves and walkable charm
Keep your eyes open because wildlife shows up when you least expect it. Seals, seabirds, and those โdid you see that?โ moments that make you pull over again.
A Unique Twist: Military Coastline Moments

One of the more unexpected parts of this trip was catching glimpses of military life along the way.
Traveling through Californiaโs coast means you are near several Navy and Marine Corps installations. Around areas like Naval Base Ventura County, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, and Naval Base Coronado, you might catch:
- Aircraft training overhead
- Naval vessels getting underway
- Early morning movement along the coastline that makes you look twice
And if you are up early enough near Coronado, there is always that quiet chance you might witness training tied to the United States Navy SEALs. Nothing guaranteed, of course, but it adds a layer of appreciation for the area that you do not get everywhere.
It is a subtle reminder that these beautiful coastlines also serve a much bigger purpose.
For military families, veterans, or anyone who appreciates military history and operations, Californiaโs coastline adds an entirely different layer to the experience. You never know when you might spot aircraft training overhead, ships offshore, or early morning activity along the beach.
Stop 3: Port Hueneme (1 Night)

This stop gave us a quieter, less tourist-heavy feel.
It is a great reset point in the middle of the drive. Think simple beaches, fewer crowds, and a slower pace before heading into the busier Southern California stretch.
One thing California absolutely delivered on throughout this trip was the food scene.
Fresh seafood is everywhere, and somehow even the small, casual spots end up serving meals you talk about long after the trip is over. One evening in Port Hueneme, we stopped at a local sushi restaurant that ended up being one of those unexpectedly memorable meals. Fresh fish, relaxed atmosphere, and the kind of place you wish existed back home.
And honestly, California may have some of the hardest-to-resist Mexican food in the country.
From quick roadside taco spots to coastal restaurants serving fresh fish tacos and homemade salsa, there is no shortage of incredible options along this route. Some of our favorite meals were not the fancy reservations. They were the spontaneous stops that smelled too good to pass up.
That became part of the experience too. Not just seeing California, but tasting it.
Between the fresh produce stands, coastal seafood, authentic Mexican food, and local restaurants tucked into beach towns, this trip turned into just as much of a food adventure as it was a scenic road trip.
Stop 4: Coronado (1 Night)

We wrapped the trip in Coronado, and honestly, it was the perfect ending.
What we loved:
- Wide, clean beaches that feel easy and relaxing
- Walkable streets and waterfront views
- A laid-back atmosphere that somehow still feels special
One of the biggest surprises was Silver Strand State Beach.
While many visitors head toward the more crowded and well-known beach areas, Silver Strand felt quieter, calmer, and far less tourist-heavy. It ended up being one of our favorite sunset spots of the entire trip.
The colors that evening barely looked real. Deep blues, soft pinks, glowing orange reflections across the water. One of those moments where everyone naturally stops talking for a minute just to take it in.
We were lucky enough to capture that magic together as a family, and honestly, those are the moments that tend to stay with you long after the trip ends. Not necessarily the big attractions, but the unexpected quiet moments in between.
If you are looking for a place to slow down, breathe a little deeper, and end a California coastal adventure on a peaceful note, Silver Strand is absolutely worth adding to the itinerary.
Final Thoughts: Why This Trip Works
This itinerary works because it does not try to be just one thing.
It is:
- National park adventure
- Scenic road trip
- Coastal relaxation
- A little bit of unexpected discovery
And maybe my favorite part, California kept reminding us of other places we love. Washington, Oregon, Hawaii, even the Bahamas. It is like multiple destinations wrapped into one trip.
If you are planning a family trip, a couples getaway, or even a solo reset, this route gives you flexibility without sacrificing experience.
And if you build in time to stop often, explore freely, and take the scenic route when it calls you, this is the kind of trip that stays with you long after you get home.
